It was a pleasure to participate in a cross-party panel discussion last week, hosted by Grayling at the Pierhead and moderated by ITV Wales’ Rob Osborne.
The discussion, Six Months To Go, was a chance to reflect on the political context and polling perspectives, especially the Caerffili by-election result and offer views on what this might mean for voting intentions towards the countdown to a new Senedd next May.
It was a vibrant debate with each party anticipating their own unique challenges and strategies with a voting landscape and electorate that’s changed dramatically.
One positive aspect that was recognised was the active engagement and interest of younger voters on the doorstep (with the voting age starting at 16) and the understanding that they have a chance to influence real change through the Senedd and voice their aspirations for their own future and their communities. They will also have a bigger body of politicians to influence with representation increasing from 60 to 96 Members in 16 brand new constituencies. The Senedd explains why and how this change happened on this page You can also see how people’s voices have brought about significant and lasting change through influencing the democratic process here
