Living by the river: Five Years After Storm Dennis, supporting Communities at Flood Risk

February marked five years since Storm Dennis devastated homes and businesses across South Wales. Since then, many people have suffered subsequent flooding and continue to live under constant threat. More needs to be done, and much more quickly, to support communities who now live in fear every time it rains heavily.

On the anniversary of Storm Dennis, I organised an event in Pontypridd to discuss what has happened since 2020 and what still needs to be done. The event brought together representatives from RCT Council, Natural Resources Wales (NRW), Dŵr Cymru, and the British Red Cross to discuss progress and future plans most importantly, we listened to residents and communities who live with the ongoing risk of flooding.

My team and I remain in contact with those who require further support. We’re currently compiling a list of people who were previously denied flood gates but now require them. I encourage anyone who hasn’t yet been in touch but needs support to please reach out.
