Pontypridd Town Development

On the 15th November, the Cabinet of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council published a progress report on the regeneration of Pontypridd Town Centre. In this report, the development options for both the Bingo Hall site and 96-99a and 100-102 Taff Street (the old M&S and Dorothy Perkins/Burtons building) are described as ‘currently being considered’.

Having attended briefings as a Senedd Member and a local Councillor about the future of these sites, it seems that the thoughts of those that live, work and enjoy Pontypridd are not being factored into decision making processes.

So that I can best represent your views,  I’d like to hear from local residents, businesses and users of the town about what you’d like to see happen to these sites. I’d be grateful if you could please do so by completing this short survey.

What developments would you like to see on the old Bingo site?

Q: What developments would you like to see at 96-99a and 100-102 Taff St (the old M&S and Dorothy Perkings/ Burtons buildings)?
A: Hybrid enterprise incubator / pop up event space. See the excellent https://foundersandco.uk/ now launched in Swansea.

But crucially any investment should only me made to publicly (democratically) owned assets, not handing further public money to absentee out of town ‘investors’ (ransom seeking rentiers). Compulsory purchase should be considered to any investor without a published development plan for their sites.

Q: What developments would you like to see on the old Bingo site?
A: The site should remain undeveloped and a green space at a rather congested part of the town (buildings and roads alike). Provision should instead be made to constructing a safe multi modal over bridge crossing to the train station. This would both eradicate the need for a traffic stopping traffic light section but also ensure a more visitor (and general user) experience in what should be a gateway to the high street (not a narrow side street as was/is).

Q: What developments would you like to see on the old Bingo site?
A: We need a diverse range of retail outlets that would allow small quirky businesses. The bigger names dont show interest..lets make the Town like Cowbridge. A place where people can come and shop and have a coffee, walk in the park and leave with some nice quality goods.
