I have continued to challenge the Welsh Government to show a renewed focus to reduce our reliance on primary aggregates and to review MTAN 1. This is essential to ensure that those commitments are delivered in all communities, including those impacted by quarrying at Craig yr Hesg.
Both the First Minister and Deputy First Minister acknowledged that they needed to do more on this issue with the First Minister recognising that “dust, noise and health impacts have always got to be taken really seriously” and also that there’s a need to ensure consistent enforcement by authorities and that they take action when conditions are breached.
However, in terms of meeting the immediate needs of Glyncoch and nearby communities who are impacted, the commitments fell short of recognising the breach of the 200m buffer zone as a national policy, with another reference to the establishment of a Craig-yr-Hesg quarry liaison group. I share the view of many residents that this won’t be enough to address the immediate health and environmental concerns.
Again, I also urged members of the Welsh Government to watch the powerful and informative short film Hollow Mountain produced be Mark Griffiths.
