Heledd Fychan MS champions Women's Institute’s Neurodiversity Campaign in the Senedd

On Wednesday, 26th March, Heledd Fychan, Plaid Cymru’s Member of the Senedd for South Wales Central, led a debate in the Senedd inspired by the Women's Institute's (WI) campaign, Thinking Differently: Autistic and ADHD Women and Girls. The debate highlighted the systemic barriers faced by neurodivergent women and girls and called for urgent action to improve diagnosis and support.

Speaking in the Senedd, Ms Fychan paid tribute to the many autistic and ADHD women and girls whose voices continue to inspire change. She expressed gratitude to the WI, particularly Ann Ball from Pontypridd WI and Maggie Knight from Glam Girls, who have tirelessly championed the Thinking Differently campaign.

Ms Fychan highlighted the challenges faced by neurodivergent women and girls within the education system, emphasising the harmful consequences of delayed diagnoses, misdiagnoses, and societal stereotypes. She shared insights from conversations with educators, local charities, and neurodivergent individuals, underscoring the need for improved training, increased support, and an overhaul of diagnostic tools that overlook gender-specific experiences.

Reflecting on the debate, Ms Fychan said: “This debate was an opportunity to amplify the experiences of women and girls, whose voices have been too often unheard in discussions about neurodiversity. Inspired by the Women's Institute's 'Thinking Differently' campaign, I am calling for better diagnosis, enhanced support, and meaningful actions from the Welsh Government to address these disparities. It is vital that we challenge stereotypes and ensure every individual receives the recognition and support they deserve."
