This weekend marks the fifth anniversary of the devastating floods caused by Storm Dennis across south Wales. Many of these communities were again affected by flooding from Storm Bert in November 2024, raising concerns among residents and business owners about the increasing risk of flooding. The trauma from these events has left many unable to sleep whenever it rains heavily and has significantly impacted their mental health. Some residents even fear for their lives due to the ongoing flood risks
To commemorate the anniversary and respond to the recent floods, Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for South Wales Central, Heledd Fychan, will host an event in Pontypridd this Saturday. The focus will be on improving flood management and coexisting with our rivers. The event will cover lessons learned from past floods, future flood mitigation plans, and responses to climate change. It will provide an opportunity for homeowners and business owners to hear directly from those responsible for flood response.
Speakers at the event include Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, and senior representatives from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales. Presentations will also be given by the British Red Cross and the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales, both of which are working to better support at-risk communities.
Ms. Fychan, who was a Councillor for Pontypridd Town Ward during Storm Dennis, led calls for an independent inquiry into the floods. Since becoming a Senedd Member, she has continued to support affected residents and has been vocal in advocating for action by authorities to minimize flood risks. Her efforts include calls for the establishment of a Welsh Flood Forum and an overhaul of flood management and investigation in Wales.
The event is open to all, but spaces are limited and must be booked in advance. For further information, please visit LIVING BY THE RIVER from Dennis to Bert 2020 – 2025 - Heledd Fychan ENG or contact Heledd Fychan and her team via [email protected] or by calling 01443 853214.
