Heledd Fychan MS meets with social support group friends R Us Aberdare

I recently had the opportunity to visit and speak with the social support group Friends R Us Aberdare. The group meets regularly on the second Monday of every month, except January, between 7 and 9pm in the St John's Ambulance Hall, Aberdare and is open to everyone who has suffered from mental health illness or know anyone who has, or have been or are a carer.

It was established by Geraint Price and Meinir Williams following the sudden death of Geraint’s son, and Meinir’s brother, Emyr, as a result of his mental health illness in April 2002.

The group undoubtedly offers a great deal of support for those who attend, and as a result, were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022 after 20 years of serving the community. Their trips are also funded annually by the National Lottery Community Fund and there was great excitement when I visited about an upcoming trip to Longleat.

We had a great hour long discussion, with plenty of issues for me to raise when the Senedd starts meeting again in September. To find out more about the group, please visit their Facebook page 'Friends R Us'
